The Great Aunts day with Cole

Cole's great aunts JoJo and Sandy were here for a visit. They live in Sacramento and I am sure will be visiting as often as possible, making Cole's grandma very jealous indeed (hey she is the one who decided to stay in CT). We all went out for lunch at pyramid Ale house in Berkeley and we have found that Cole is quite the social butterfly, this is his 4th time to a restaurant and each time he has behaved wonderfully, the next test will be to see how he does on airplanes - keep your finger's crossed.

Why do babies need baths?

OK, so even after a multiple number of try's this bath thing is still quite the puzzle to me...and Cole seems to want to be in any position that requires at least six limbs that have opposable thumbs...so you can see the problem. But you have to admit, they are so cute naked and wet.

I suck at blogging

Yup that's right I suck at blogging. Ok so this is Cole sucking (he is a bit confused by the way, we dont know what it means when one confuses a nose for a breast only time will tell) but I needed an image to tie this together. Recently Shelley turned a friend onto blogging -someone who never blogged before and in a very short time he has gone on to post more blogs with more content than I have even thought of.. and then there is the friend who inspired me to blog, her blog is almost daily and she writes so wonderfully and captures such great detail...and then there is me, I barely even remember that I have a blog, and it takes me days to get the blogs I come up with onto the screen often times I take so long on topical moments that it isn't even worth it anymore. SOOOOOOOO, what does all this mean? It means I am going to try better at providing better information on a more timely manner in as entertaining format as possible (I mean come on how interesting is it really to read about someone Else's life?). So to help catch up and to save myself sometime and to save yourself having to read more than one post I am going to do three in one for you (look at that great deals - who said my blog aint worth it).

Part one (the most recent)

Last night was my first time truly away from Cole for a significant period of time. I had attended a lecture in the city and met up with a friend for dinner. The entire time I could only think of Cole and of Shelley. It was amazing how much I missed them even though I knew I was coming home in a few short hours. Its is amazing how fast priorities change - I would normally have been focused 100 percent on the business at hand, but now instead of talking shop the entire evening I couldn't help but steer the topic toward the best gig in town - fatherhood!

Part two (Visitors)
OK before anyone writes to complain, I only started this recently so dont get bent out of shape, you'll just have to come by again soon (and remind me that I am doing this). So with every person that visits I am going to try and get a picture of them with Cole. The first lucky visitors to have their pics with the man of the hour were Eiko and Jen. There have been a number of visitors already including Coles Grandma (my mom) Grammy (Shelley's mom) His great aunts auntie JoJo and Auntie Sandy and many of our friends. I think I have the grandmothers pictures somewhere and will try and find them and everyone else I know will be visiting soon so keep an eye out for more pictures of Cole and his California family soon.

Part three (Pictures)
When Cole was two weeks old we hired a good friend who is an amazing photographer to come and do a family photo shoot for us. The pics that came out of this were amazing and if you want to view them you can visit her smugmug site through the following link. If you are at all inclined to want a photo feel free to purchase direct from the site...I think you are supporting her in some way by doing that...is that right Deb?
Well that wraps up my catch up Blog, it's a little long but it hopefully it will be one of the only this long. I will try to be better at being more current and I hope everyone is well.

Just monkeyin around

The way this little guy is growing you'd never know he was born one month early - he now weighs in at 8lbs 11oz and is 21 inches long. His strength is amazing and everyday is an adventure for all of us.

Shelley and I have been getting as much sleep as we can although I don't know when the last time we actually slept at the same time was (look at that built in birth control - don't quite understand how people get pregnant so quickly after giving birth, I mean come on, how in the world do you get an Irish twin? either those people are super human or there is alot of oops looks like I rolled over in my sleep naked last night ...anyways...).

Speaking of sleep, we are both getting good at pretending to sleep when we hear the explosive farts that we have come to know as the diaper change of all diaper changes (Can someone tell me how such little bodies can make such loud noises from such tiny holes) although it does seem like Cole is an Equal opportunity baby and gives both of us our fair share of very messy diapers.

I still can't believe that 5 weeks have already gone by, these five weeks have been so amazing - watching Cole grow and develop, I am just so thankful that I was able to take this time away from work and be here for all of it.

More later.

The Back Story

Well, believe it or not it has been one month already since Cole was born. The time has gone by pretty quickly. Amazing to think of all that has happened over the last 9 months.

For those who may not know, or may have forgotten (how you could forget I don't know) there is a bit of a back story on how it is that we are here today with Cole. I figured I might as well do a quick recap here for documentation sake.

So 9 months ago Shelley and I started our journey together toward parenthood. Our first visit with the prenatal staff did not go as well as it should have and had us in getting an ultrasound at 8 weeks discovering the first of many complications. This complication disappeared in time but was the precursor to the many to come, the biggest of which was found at 19 weeks. During another (routine) ultrasound it was discovered that Shelley had an incompetent cervix - meaning that her cervix started to open too early (um 20 weeks early - yeah I'd say that's too early) and we were told could very well lead to a miscarriage. After a few weeks of monitoring it was decided that surgery was needed and a cerclage (fancy word for stitch) was used to close the cervix and hold the baby in - with this came strict or complete bed rest, meaning that Shelley could not get out of bed for anything but doctor visits and yes that means even staying in bed for the bathroom (although do you call it going to the bathroom when you stay in bed, you can't say I'm going to the bedroom...just doesn't make sense...anyways) for 8 plus weeks Shelley was on complete bed rest at which point she was given the freedom to use the bathroom, but remain in bed for everything else. All said and done over 100 days were spent in bed and just when the end was coming into view with the removal of the cerclage at week 35 another complication arose. literally right after the cerclage was taken out and Shelley was given freedom to get up and finally move about she began to itch like she never itched before. This was related to a very rare liver condition called cholestasis which the only know cure for was to give birth. while the doctors wanted to wait for as long as possible to induce labor the appearance of a rash a few days later prompted them to induce labor on December 13th 2007. After a fairly short but extremely painful birth (Shelley did it sans epidural - if you didn't kn0w it before NOW you know it for sure - Shelley is a bad ass) Cole was Born on December 14th, but not without matching mom for drama. He was born with the cord around his neck for starters, which led to his heart beat to be low at first which freaked the Doctors out since he was considered a preemie (by literally 22 hrs) and this combination landed him in the high observation nursery for one week in an incubator. This was a long and difficult week not because of his condition as much as the bull shit we had to deal with concerning the hospital. . As you can see it was a long 9 months to get here and this is only the shortened version, if you ever want to hear the entire saga in full detail I would recommend committing yourself first because it will blow your mind. All of this I will say was made so much easier because of all of the support given by our friends and family and i can not thank them enough for all that they did to help out. we are home now for three weeks and everything is good, Cole is gaining weight, sleeping lots and pooing like it is his only job - well I guess it is. Shelley is feeling better than she did before pregnancy even and life feels good.

2008 - The begining of a better year

Well, if there is one thing that Cole has taught me (ok, he has taught me a crap load already, more on that later) it is to not put off anything too long, so i actually got this blog started and up instead of just saying I am going to do it. I plan on using this space to update everyone on the goings on of Cole and I am going to be realistic in that i dont see this as being a daily or even weekley event but I will do it as often as i can. I am currently working on getting all my pictures together and i will post as many as I can over the next week, but here are a few to tide yall over till then. Hope the year 2008 is starting off well for everyone, and I can only hope it is an easier year than 2007 for us. Talk soon.
